Welcome to the Hotel SRO

According to the SRO Collaborative there are over 500 buildings considered "Single Room Occupancies" in San Francisco, California alone.  Click on Harriet the parrot to view TNDC's (Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation) portfolio of SRO housing units; many buildings located in the Tenderloin District, a largely lower-income district of the central city of San Francisco.

The Hotel SRO aims to provide information for tenants, potential tenants, and the homeless who continue to be classified as "homeless" while paying the month-to-month rental fees to the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC).

The Mayor's Office of San Francisco amended its SRO Visitor Policy in July 2006, stating:

"SRO owners or operators are required to prominently post the Uniform Visitor Policy and any Supplemental Visitor Policy on a   minimum size of 11" x 17" by the entrance or in the lobby."

Basically, there is a 2-visitor per visitor limit, and 8 consecutive days per visitor limit, as well as other adherences.

San Francisco and encumbant Chris Daley receive credible mention regarding SRO hotel policy changes on Wikipedia.com, primarily noting citywide bans for charging visitors an overnite fee.

This website Hotel SRO and what is currently the CTC Blog (affiliated with San Francisco Network Ministries) has been developed in an effort to maintain a VISIBLE image for HOTEL SRO TENANTS; similarly, CTC Blog is for TNC, Tenderloin residents working with computers and to improve the Tenderloin community overall.  Therefore, the Hotel SRO is offering space, similar to a blog or forum or community calendar, whereby interested tenants can ...

  • contribute their knowledge of happenings (current events) at their hotel,
  • post on the HOTEL SRO calendar,
  • let off steam, provide firsthand insight into the comings and goiings of hotellers on the HOTEL SRO BLOG , and
  • Basically, keep up with the SRO Community on a month by month basis.

Despite the sometimes seedy reputation of a city hotel, the SROs in San Francisco are home to many city dwellers, and the affordable rents allow for much diversity. Diversity in a low-income community can be a mixed blessing.  Read up (see link to the right) on your Tenants Rights Handbook (17 pages) distributed by the San Francisco Department of Public Health... and a good read! Note: This is a .pdf file (right click your mouse to download) which requires adobe acrobat reader (or other similar .pdf freeware) to view.

Finally, there should be and may be a resource page for Tenants outside of the legal and practical (find me a place) information available for SF Hotel SRO residents.  As noted with the SRO literature, most hotels organized through TNDC are staffed with social workers to assist tenants.  Sometimes however, tenancy may be confused with convenience and other resources available for low-income residents are overlooked.

If you wish to notify the HOTEL SRO about events at your location each month (i.e., religeous meetings, tutoring, computer center hours, recovery meeting, etc...) please reply by e-mail, the "contact us" page, or post on the CTC Blog. Thanks!

The Hotel SRO hopes that your room is not without a view, and in hoping to improve the view, Hotel SRO asks that you assist the Central City SRO Collaborative by completing this questionnaire (click for online form).  Your responses will remain anonymous. Thanks!
